Jitja is a collaboration between two Larrakia sisters, Cyan and Mikaela.

Growing up in a highly creative and artistic family, expressing themselves through art has been a lifelong practice.

After living in different parts of the globe, Cyan and Mikaela were reunited on their ancestral lands of Gulumerrodjin country, Darwin.

Their respective art styles had developed separately; a wish to compare and explore these differences resulted in this collaboration.

Each sister chose a colour palette for their initial canvas, then swapped palettes for their second canvas.

The final two canvases saw a sister start a base each, then given to the other to complete.

The circle motif is used to tie all paintings together and represents the cyclical nature of Indigenous belief systems. The snake pays homage to the creator spirit, the Rainbow Serpent.

“Jitja” is a northern australian Indigenous term for sister.
